A key requirement for the use of Carrier Ethernet technologies in building transport networks is the ability to match the incumbent SDH/SONET mechanisms of sub-50ms service protection in ring topologies such as SNCP. ITU-T has defined a standardized scheme for achieving this objective through Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) specified in G.8032, without incurring bandwidth penalties inherent in SNCP.
